- Hearing aid technicians are responsible for the maintenance and repair of hearing aids. They work with a wide range of devices, from simple earmolds to sophisticated digital models that can be programmed to respond to specific sounds or frequencies.Hearing aid technicians must have extensive knowledge about how these devices work and how they can be repaired when they break down. They also need strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with their clients.
Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery is looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and service-oriented individual to be a part of our Hearing Aid Program. The individual in this role is expected to assist patients in our clinic and balance other daily responsibilities in a team-based setting. They will provide support to Audiologists and Otolaryngology physicians. This will role will support hearing aid services at the Brighton Center for Specialty Care and West Ann Arbor Health Center. The individual will split their time between these two locations. The individual will also be required to occasionally provide coverage for the hearing aid services at East Ann Arbor Health Center when needed.
The responsibilities of a hearing aid specialist include:
> Interview patients to learn their symptoms and medical histories;
> Conduct screenings and tests to determine the severity and type of hearing impairment;
> Carry out basic hearing test such as bone conduction, air conduction, speech audiometry tests, etc.;
> Analyze test findings to make diagnoses, then discuss possible solutions with patients;
> Recommend and dispense assistive listening devices;
> Take measurements and make earmolds to ensure that hearing aids fit properly;
> Instruct patients in how to use and maintain the devices, providing demonstrations and information;
> Assist audiologists with nonsurgical procedures designed to treat hearing disorders;
> Modify devices that have already been placed in patients’ ears, to make them function or fit better;
> Make repairs and replace defective parts;
> Teach patients aural rehabilitation techniques;
> Create and maintain customer computer files;
> Train other staffers, if required by the employer;
> Receive continuing education and read professional publications to stay up-to-date on medical knowledge and techniques.
- Requirements
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Audiology or a related field.
State licensure or certification as a Hearing Aid Specialist.
Previous experience in conducting hearing evaluations and fitting hearing aids is preferred.
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards governing the practice of hearing aid dispensing.
Proficiency in using audiometric equipment and software for hearing testing and hearing aid programming.
