Description
test, analyze, and record data from samples and specimens. They often work in the medical, pharmaceutical, or chemical fields, and may perform a variety of duties, including:
Conducting tests: Using standard analytical techniques, such as spectrophotometry, gravimetric, and colorimetric, to perform tests on samples
Recording and analyzing data: Logging and analyzing data from tests, and evaluating it against quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) standards
Maintaining equipment: Setting up and calibrating lab equipment, and making minor repairs
Ensuring safety: Following safety standards and regulations, and keeping the lab clean and organized
Supporting projects: Participating in production and R&D projects, or helping to automate lab activities
Requirements
The primary qualifications for getting a job as a laboratory analyst are a bachelors degree in a relevant field and some experience working in a lab environment. Many laboratories prefer applicants who have a masters degree or even a doctorate, so research the types of labs you want to work in to determine how far you should take your education. Laboratories often use a variety of tools and techniques, so actively searching out additional training and certifications can help you stand out from competitors. Other useful qualities for starting a career as a laboratory analyst include communication skills, computer skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
